Don't forget to cover these basics to losing that stubborn belly fat!

Spending hours in the gym and still not seeing results? Check out what our lead trainer Robin says about what you could be doing wrong!

Most people coming in to the gym have a couple of goals. This time of year especially, they are looking to create a better looking body for the upcoming season of shorts, tanks and swimsuits. Almost all of the people I have spoken with want to lose in their stomach area. We all would love those rock solid abs with a perfect 6 pack. Many of you come in and do lots of cardio on the treadmill or elliptical and then use the abdominal crunch machine.

While doing cardio can help you to lose weight overall, you can't spot train. In other words you can do cardio and crunches all you want, but it won't make you lose in just your stomach. Your diet is the biggest part of your success in weight loss. Eating lean proteins with each meal, which include egg whites, lean chicken and beef, protein powders in shakes etc. Having complex carbohydrates such as oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat breads and pasta and healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil, peanut butter, nuts. Eating small portions, more frequently throughout the day is also helpful. Adding fruits and vegetables for snacks in between meals and along with your meals will help you feel more full. Measure and weigh your food. You may be surprised as to how much you are actually eating.

Cardio is a good place to start for weight loss. Resistance training or lifting weights is what you need to actually change your body composition, reshape your form. You need to be challenging your body with each workout. When it gets easy, lift heavier. Don't be afraid to lift too heavy. Women would need to supplement testosterone to be able to build large bulky muscle. Between a healthy diet and a good exercise program, you will be well on your way to that beach body by summer. As a personal trainer, I am here to help people achieve their goals in the most effective ways.
